IP Subnet Calculator FAQ

What does an IP subnet calculator do?

An IP subnet calculator turns an IPv4 address and CIDR prefix into practical network details. It shows the network address, broadcast address, subnet mask, wildcard mask, usable host range and number of addresses.

What does /24 mean in an IP address?

In an address like 192.168.1.10/24, the /24 means the first 24 bits are the network part. A /24 subnet usually has 256 total IPv4 addresses, with 254 usable host addresses in normal LAN use.

What is the difference between network and broadcast address?

The network address identifies the subnet itself. The broadcast address is the last address in many IPv4 subnets and is used to address all hosts in that subnet. Normal host devices usually use the addresses between them.

Can I enter a subnet mask instead of CIDR?

Yes. Enter an IPv4 subnet mask such as 255.255.255.0 and the calculator will convert it to the matching CIDR prefix when the mask is valid and contiguous.

Does this calculator support IPv6?

This tool is for IPv4 subnet calculations. IPv6 uses different address notation and a much larger address space, so it is better handled by a separate IPv6 subnet calculator.

How many usable IP addresses does a /30 subnet have?

A traditional /30 IPv4 network contains four addresses: one network address, two usable host addresses and one broadcast address. Special-use /31 point-to-point links follow different rules.
