Preguntas frecuentes sobre DNS

What is DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to find records for a domain. These records tell the internet where your website, email, or other services are located.

A record lookup

An A record maps a domain name to an IPv4 address (like 93.184.216.34). If a site is not loading, checking the A record is often the first step.

AAAA record lookup

An AAAA record maps a domain to an IPv6 address. It’s the IPv6 version of an A record and is increasingly common.

MX record lookup

MX records define which mail servers receive email for a domain. If email isn’t arriving, MX records (and related SPF/DKIM in TXT) are the usual suspects.

TXT record lookup

TXT records store text data such as SPF, DKIM, and verification tokens. Many services ask you to add a TXT record to prove domain ownership.

NS record lookup

NS records specify the authoritative nameservers for a domain. If NS records point to the wrong provider, other record changes won’t take effect correctly.

What is SOA?

The SOA record includes administrative information for a DNS zone (like the primary nameserver and timing values). It’s useful when debugging zone configuration and refresh behaviour.

Why do attackers target DNS infrastructure?

DNS servers translate domain names into IP addresses, making them a critical part of how the internet functions. Because of this, DNS infrastructure is often scanned or targeted during reconnaissance and large-scale cyber attacks. Monitoring DNS records and domain configurations can help detect misconfigurations or suspicious activity.

What is a PTR record?

A PTR record maps an IP address back to a hostname. A reverse DNS lookup queries that record, unlike a regular DNS lookup that finds IP addresses or other records for a domain.

How do I find the IP address of a domain?

When you enter a website address in your browser, the domain name must first be translated into an IP address. This process is handled by the Domain Name System (DNS). A DNS lookup shows the IP address and related records for a domain. The resulting A and AAAA records identify the domain's IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
